Designing a System

The Sound Designer for this show came from a background of straight plays, so he focused on the handful of sound effects throughout the musical and left the programming and designing of how the show sounds to me. My job started with creating a workable inputs/outputs document and programming over 100 scene cues on the console to keep everyone sounding their best at every moment. Fortunately, the mix position in The Muriel Kauffman Theatre is outstanding, allowing me to adjust how all 32 singers and 20 orchestra members sound from the board while hearing exactly what the audience hears.

With only two and a half days between load-in and final dress, we stuck with the house speaker system, and I coordinated with Grant Conrad, the IATSE Sound Head for the production to map what we needed onto their system. From there, I line-by-line mixed the show while dialing in the sound of each of the 52 mics, taking notes when I couldn't do two things at once, until the music was crystal clear, dynamic, and powerful.
